A Story of Dumplings

Dumplings are a versatile food enjoyed worldwide, with a history dating back thousands of years. Their origins can be traced to ancient China, where the first written records appear during the Han Dynasty (202 BCE–220 CE). A Chinese physician, Zhang Zhongjing, is often credited with inventing dumplings to help people stay warm and healthy in winter.
Dumplings spread along trade routes, adapting to local ingredients and cultures. In Europe, they evolved into dishes like Italian ravioli, Polish pierogi, and German knödel. Similarly, Central and South Asian dumplings include momos and samosas, while Japan has gyoza, inspired by Chinese jiaozi.
Their universal appeal stems from their simplicity: a dough wrapper filled with a variety of ingredients, steamed, boiled, fried, or baked. Dumplings have since become a beloved comfort food in many cuisines.
